The North American Electric Reliability Corp. (NERC) has warned that the electric grid is a “hyper complex risk environment” and that its reliability is threatened mainly by physical and cyber attacks. NERC officials highlighted the increasing rate of software vulnerabilities being discovered and a recent spate of attacks on grid infrastructure, putting physical security back on the top of the agenda. NERC has also pointed out that the geopolitical climate and tensions between countries like Russia, China and the US have contributed to a dramatic uptick in malicious cyber activities on the electric grid, highlighting the need for good internal security and monitoring of operational technology systems.
